Teaching Truth in Portugal

Be part of the team that is sharing the Gospel in Portugal

You have a different calling that prevents you from serving long-term overseas. As missionaries, we can go for you. Be a part of the positive impact in our community by supporting our work.

Christian education is hard to find for overseas missionaries. We serve as the administrator and facility manager at an international Christian school to educate children of missionaries in the greater Lisbon area.

Why Portugal?

Portugal is a country of 10.3 million people, is only .4% Evangelical Christian and only has 19 Evangelical, Bible-proclaiming churches.

Why education?

One of the top reasons for missionaries leaving the field is the inability to secure adequate education for their children.

Our Journey

Johnny and Jana both started serving small with missions in our church. Sometimes they served by working at block parties, teaching classes, or driving teams to and from the airport. Johnny's first overseas trip was to Tanzania in 2005. The main purpose of that trip was to work with missionaries to share Bible stories. Jana's first overseas trip was to China in 2008 where she taught English. It was after these life-changing trips that we decided that we needed to experience overseas mission trips together. In 2011, they traveled to South Sudan to share Bible stories with the Toposa people. It was on this trip that Jana felt God telling her that she was going to be a missionary some day. Over the next few years, they tried to figure out if there was a place or a people group that God would have them to go. They continued to go on short term trips trying to figure it out. Johnny and Jana really had a desire to go wherever God could use them most.  After visiting friends who were serving in the Middle East, they felt that this was the area to which God was calling them. In 2015, Johnny and Jana started their missions journey with ABWE. They went on a vision trip to the Middle East North Africa in January of 2016, and by August of 2016, they were on the field. Johnny and Jana both left their full time jobs and sold most of their belongings so that they could volunteer their time as missionaries. They served at an international Christian school for 6 years. Johnny started as support staff where he helped with lunch duty, event preparations, and helped wherever else he was needed. Later, he became the facility manager, and he worked to manage the cleaning staff and supervise maintenance of the building. Jana started as the assistant to the Head of School and also taught 3rd grade her first year. Later, she became the Director of Education & Technology where she helped teachers with professional development and technology. Over the time they were in the Middle East North Africa, it became obvious that they were no longer going to be able to stay due to visa problems. But God continued to open doors for them! After much prayer and searching, Johnny and Jana found a school in need of their gifts and expertise. In March of 2022, they relocated to Lisbon, Portugal to serve at Greater Lisbon Christian Academy. Johnny is the facility manager, and Jana is the administrator.

Meet Johnny

Johnny grew up in Beaumont, Texas. Even though his family didn't take him to church, he attended a neighborhood church with friends. After serving in the Air Force, Johnny eventually started working in a paper mill. The job was dangerous and he wanted to know for sure what would happen to him if he died. That is when Johnny accepted Christ as his Savior. From that moment, Johnny felt a burden to go and serve.

Meet Jana

Jana grew up in Midland, Texas. While her mother was a believer, her father didn't know Christ. She went to church off and on growing up, but it wasn't until her mother started taking her to church regularly as a teenager that she declared Jesus to be her Lord and Savior. Jana attended Texas Tech University for her undergraduate degree and later got her Texas teacher's certification for Early Childhood through 4th grade. She taught in the public school system for 10 years. During that time, Jana completed her Master's degree from Lamar University in Educational Technology Leadership. She then was able to earn her principal certification in the state of Texas. Jana knew that God was going to do something big with her Master's degree, but she had no idea that it was going to lead her to where she is today.
